Students across the peninsula have been praised after a largely successful pass rate for their GCSEs, based on Centre Assessed Grades.

Ipswich High School in Woolverstone even managed a 100% success rate.

Year 11 pupils at Holbrook Academy, Royal Hospital School and Ipswich High School, were marked by their teachers that used course work and mock exam results as a guide to their final assessment.

Out of the 107 GCSE students at Holbrook Academy, 81% achieved a grade 4 or above in English and maths.

Nicola Mayhew, Acting Headteacher, said on social media: "The results reflect the hard work and focus that students committed to their studies. In addition, they have shown strength of character, resilience and maturity in handling the cancellation of examinations and school closure. We couldn't be any prouder of them.'

"Students are well equipped and prepared for their post-16 education and training and we have been really pleased with local post-16 providers who have, with us, supported students in preparing them for their next steps."

Students at The Royal Hospital School hit a 96.4% 9-4 pass rate in this year's GCSE results based on Centre Assessed Grades and a year on year improvement for the School.

In addition, there was a 45.4% pass rate for 9 to 7 grades (the equivalent of the old A*/A grades), 41 pupils achieved at least six 9-7 grades and 16 pupils were awarded a 9 to 7 in every subject studied.

Catherine Stevens, Deputy Head (Academic), said: "We had high expectations for this year's cohort based on their accomplishments over the past two years and their continued hard work right up until the day that it was announced that examinations would not take place.

"The Centre Assessed Grades they have been awarded are an honest and rigorous assessment of individual performance and I would like to congratulate the whole year group on a set of results that they should be proud of, despite all the uncertainty in the run up to today."

RHS had already released its Sports BTEC results before the government last night announced BTEC grades would be held back.

RHS pupils who took the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport achieved outstanding results with 3 Distinction*s, 6 Distinctions and 4 Merits. This qualification is the equivalent of an A Level with a Distinction on a par with an A grade.

Sarah Williams, Head of Academic PE, said: "I am really proud of this year's cohort. They had already completed 3 of the 4 units before lock-down and they sat an external exam last year, so these results are an accurate reflection of their achievements."

Ipswich High School, an independent boarding establishment, saw 100% of students passing their classes, with more than 62% of grades awarded were between 9 and 7, with 68 of those being grade 9s, which is an equivalent to A*.

Nicola Griffiths, the school's acting headteacher during the spring and summer terms, said: "I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to all of our pupils receiving their GCSE results today.

"We are absolutely delighted for our pupils that they have achieved such excellent results – level with our record-breaking results in 2019. These combined with our outstanding A level results last week, mark a phenomenal year in the school's history."
