Police have confirmed pepper spray was used to help restrain a Shotley man that attacked a policeman

Last Thursday's incident in Shotley, came after police received reports about concern for the safety of a person in the village.

Armed police arrived at the scene before a man in his 50s arrived a short while later and an altercation took place.

An officer was kicked in the leg and punched multiple times in the head and face by the suspect after an attempt to make an arrest was made.

Officers also seized a firearm at the property and a spokesperson for Suffolk Police said: "To restrain him, the male was pepper sprayed."

The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of stalking and assault of a police officer and taken to Martlesham Police investigation centre for questioning.

He was bailed until Friday, July 14, while further investigations take place.
