Game birds, top tips on country cooking, a bit of pleasant feather pheasant plucking and live music from an up and coming young star are being served up at the Shotley Rose later this month.

Shotley farmer and forager Adam Colwill will be giving people an opportunity to try all sorts of meat from the land on the Shotley peninsula as he launches his own countryside business, the Gamekeeper's BBQ.

Customers will be able to try a whole range of game, including pan fried pigeon, rabbit, partridges and venison for those looking to taste old favourites and others trying them for the first time.

"We are doing this just to get meat out there really," said Adam. "This is something I have been passionate about since I was a kid really.

"Game is really good meat but just not enough people know about it.

"If we live in the countryside we should 100% know more about our food here.

"We have lost our way of providing for ourselves a bit. We have fruit, veg and meat here but it is to easy to go to the supermarket to pick it up really."

Adam has timed the promotion of this evening at the Shotley Rose to convinced with the traditional shooting season, when county folk would have to rely on what they caught to survive, and the modern day benefits to our diet.

He said: "My passion is to get the word out there that we have good meat that is healthy, tasty and easy to use.

"September is the beginning of the partridge and duck season and I will be busy throughout the winter shooting so this is the ideal month t start.

"I spoke with Sarah and she agreed to help after I had that initial idea to do it."

While foraging for mushroom and the likes will be on future agenda, the September 23 dates aimed at the meat-eater, so vegetarians and vegans may not be catered for.

Adam explained while coleslaw would be available that was not the point of the evening and is sure non-meat-eaters will understand.

"I play cricket with Vegan, he is not a meat eater and does not agree with it, but he has said if people are going to eat meat then this is the way to do it.

"This is the start but being in the country means growing veg, fruits nd everything else, so you never know. That is what being a gamekeeper is about."

Rose landlady Sarah Pallant was delighted to support Adam in his venture and explained while she would ordinarily be as inclusive as possible, recognised this was a special occasion.

"We would ordinarily cater for vegetarians and vegans but this night is about promoting game, rabbit, pigeon, partridges, whatever."

Adam outlined the wide choice of dishes and way to cook that game can be used for.

He said: :For example there is rabbit curry, venison chilli, and you can use pheasant just like chicken."It has as much if not more protein, less fat and all you need to do is cook it for less time to get really tasty results.

"Cook it in a sauce and with pheasant no need to brow

" If I can do it then anyone can, our evening will be about cooking various meats in various ways."

Sarah is also keen that food on the peninsula does not go to waste and all the community, young old, and newbies to the peninsula can enjoy what is on their doorstep.

She said: "A lot of shoots go on so it is good to ensure there is no waste.

"We want to support all our community, including the showers and this helps people to learn about what is on their doorstep and perhaps try someone new and different."

Adam added:"People need to know more and understand more about game and what we do in the country. If people don't understand they tend to back away from things, so we want to show them what we have. It is OK, it is nice, try it."

To add even more spice to the evening guests will be entertained by Adam's 16-year-old daughter Skye Colwill with her unique blend of musical ballads.

Sarah said: "Skye is a future star, so that will be fun too."
