A determined photographer has snapped a stunning Perseid meteor passing over the peninsula.

Despite a full Sturgeon Supermoon lighting up the night sky, and making seeing the meteors difficult, Shaun Sams captured this outstanding image as the shower passed over his home in Shotley last night.

According to experts, the Perseid meteor shower is one of the highlights of many meteor hunters' calendar due to its high hourly rate and bright meteors, caused by the Earth slamming into the debris left behind by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle in July and August every year.

It is called the Perseids because the meteors seem to originate from the constellation of Perseus. Astronomers call this point the meteor shower's radiant.

Peninsula photographers can also see the Perseid shower tonight and tomorrow just after midnight.

Although just taking pictures as a hobby, Shaun Sams, an ex Royal Navy chief petty officer, has built an impressive portfolio of pictures including most recently the Galactic Core captured at the Strand on his way home from work.
