A peninsula porpoise has perished despite efforts Marine Rescue crews and Holbrook Coastguard.
A member of the public called (( when they saw the mammal in distress near Admiralty pier in Shotley Gate on Saturday afternoon.
Experts from Marine Rescue were first on the scene but called Holbrook Coastguard for assistance.
"We were called to a report of a stranded porpoise at Shotley Gate," a Coastguard spokesman said: "Marine Rescue attempted to save the mammal but unfortunately were unable to on this occasion. Once they were clear of the scene the Coastguard team was stood down."
The UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP), who investigate instances of whales and dolphins beaching on land, were informed in order to remove the animal from the beach and to conduct an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Holbrook Coastguard helped rescue a stranded fisherman suffering from hypothermia. Full story here...
