Peninsula football club sends sympathy after young boy hurt by collapsing goal posts
An investigation has been launched after a young boy was hospitalised when goalposts fell on to him.
The youngster, named only as Riley, is understood to be part of Brantham Athletic under-10s squad, was hurt when a set of goalposts he and a friend were looking to use, collapsed on top him.
A first responder from the club's leisure centre got to him quickly and he was then taken to hospital by ambulance.
Goodwill messages have been sent to the family of the boy who was treated in hospital for more than a week following the incident.
Darren Smith, Brantham AFC chief executive, said: "We wish Riley a speedy recovery and wish him and his family well."
The health and safety executive was called by the club as a matter of procedure and the incident is being investigated.
A spokesperson for Babergh District Council said: "We were saddened to hear of the recent incident at Brantham Athletic Football Club and our thoughts, and best wishes for a speedy recovery, are with the boy and his family.
"Our council's safety officers are currently seeking further information, and will be working with the leisure centre and Health and Safety Executive as required.
"In the meantime, whilst we recognise the benefit of football in keeping our communities active and healthy, we encourage all organisations providing footballing facilities, as well as individuals, to follow the Football Association's guidance on the safe use of goalposts, which can be found here: www.thefa.com/get-involved/goalpost-safety."
