An abandoned yacht has been removed from Shotley foreshore due to safety concerns.

A joint operation from Harwich Haven Authority and Babergh, supported by Shotley Marina staff, took action after the owner waived any responsibility for the yacht called Pepper.

She has been stranded on the beach at Shotley Gate since the storms last March.

Originally it was tied up to prevent it drifting into the shipping lanes on the river Stour.

The owner, who was sleeping in his car with his dog, had hoped to repair Pepper so he could live on board and sail away.

However, the boat became even more damaged, especially around the rudder, and after an inspection by a yacht expert from Shotley marina, it was deemed a write off.

With no insurance, and the owner not able to pay for repairs or removal.

The boat became a magnet for curious adventurous youngsters and concerns for their safety grew.

There were also concerns that when the rough weather returns, the unattended Pepper would break free and become a shipping hazard in the Stour estuary

Babergh councillor Derek Davis, who represent the Ganges ward, and its housing solutions team looked to resolve the issue.

Harwich Haven Authority agreed, due to safety concerns, to have Pepper removed and a crew took the yacht away yesterday (Wednesday).

A Harwich Haven Authority spokesperson said:

"As the Harbour Authority we were happy to assist Babergh District Councillor Derek Davis with his request to have an abandoned yacht removed from the waters close to Shotley, Suffolk.
"As a potential risk to navigational safety members of our Marine Support team were able to recover the yacht to the safety of the Authority's vessel pound located in Harwich."

Cllr Davis said: "This has been a difficult issue so I'm delighted it has been resolved as a satisfactorily as possible.

"Our thanks go the the Harwich Haven Authority and Shotley Marina in getting Pepper removed."

"Huge credit must go to the housing officer for her patience and diligence in help getting this resolved."

The owner continues to be monitored and engaged with by Babergh's housing solutions team to ensure his wellbeing.
