The Orwell Bridge has remained closed eastbound after a maintenance vehicle broke down.

The bridge was due to reopen at 6am after overnight closures for routine maintenance but the Highways vehicle lost hydraulic power and unable to move.

National Highways said the vehicle's platform which lifts engineers over the side of the bridge was stuck in the down position.

Delays are likely for motorists coming off the Shotley peninsula heading in the Felixstowe direction.

Diversions have been put in place.

Specialist teams are hoping to move the vehicle later but that part of the bridge is likely to be closed for much of this morning.

National Highways duty operations manager, Duncan Gennery, said: "We appreciate the impact the closure will have and are doing everything we can to get the broken down vehicle removed as soon as we can.

"We advise road users to plan alternative routes when travelling this morning and allow extra time for their journeys."
