The number of couples on the Shotley peninsula cheating on each other has increased in a year, according to data from an online dating site.

IllicitEncounters, a dating website for married people looking to have an affair, has revealed that adultery in the IP9 area had gone up to 161 cheats from 152 last year.

Data suggested that boredom and being stuck at home with their partners during the pandemic had prompted the surge, with mainly women looking for a dalliance or new romance.

"We have seen a rise in cheating over the last year throughout most of Suffolk, particularly since the start of autumn with almost all adults double jabbed," revealed a spokesperson for IllicitEncounters.

"Record numbers of people came back from their summer holidays miserable and looking for excitement after 18 months of being bored and stuck at home with their partners.

"We have enjoyed the busiest year in our history with women, in particular, looking to start afresh and joining in unprecedented numbers.

"The cheating surge will continue as more of us return to the office in the run-up to Christmas. Adulterers often use work as a way to cover up their affair."
