A new entrance has been opened up at the former HMS Ganges site for construction traffic to use.

The gate on the main B1456 road in Shotley Gate is part of a construction management plan agreed between the joint developers Wavensmere Homes and Galliard Homes, Babergh and various parish councils on the Shotley peninsula.

A Tarmac road has been made to take site traffic to a compound near the former parade ground behind Nelson Hall and close to the bottom part of the mast, which has been taken down for restoration.

It will mean heavy vehicles will no longer use the narrow Caledonia Road to enter the site through the ceremonial gates at Ganges.

Part of the agreement is for heavy construction traffic to only move to and from the site outside of school drop off and pick up times.

Extra signage will be displayed to ensure delivery drivers, plant and contractors know exactly where to go, remind them of the sped limits and to show consideration.

Derek Davis, Babergh district councillor for Ganges ward which covers Shotley and Erwarton was part of the discussions to minimise disruption to neighbours during the building process, which could last nearly five years.

"It is inevitable there will be a certain amount of noticeable activity, but what we have doe with the developers, is agree a plan that will minimise that as much as possible," said Cllr Davis. "Parish councillors from Shotley, Chelmondiston and Woolverstone, along with Babergh planners, the developers and myself, have held meetings to agree the construction management plan and this has resulted in sensible and manageable compromise."

The first stage of the 285 home development is underway, with the first houses due to be built in the first quarter of next year.

Sales at, what the developers are calling Barrelman's Point, are already doing well, with estate agents Connells reporting deposits for 23 homes have been already been taken.
