A seemingly innocuous leak has left hundreds of Shotley peninsula homes with low water pressure, which is likely to continue causing issues into Monday morning.

Anglian Water engineers worked throughout today after a mains water pipe sprang leak outside Shotley primary school overnight. There is also a possibility pupils will not be allowed back into school on Monday.

Initial estimates by the water company of normal service likely to resume at 11am Sunday morning proved to be optimistic as experts realised they needed to turn off major water supplies, provide a back up supply, dig up the main road in Shotley and work on the mains.

The company then predicted normal service would be back by 5pm, with the help of the water supply pumped in by tanker, but more work is required to be done, so road works are expected in the morning.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: "We are really sorry but customers in Shotley may have very low water pressure pr no water at all.

"We are working to repair a burst water main in your area so we can get your supply back to normal as soon as possible but it is proving to be a complex job that is taking longer than expected."

Nub News pictures show the little leak outside the school, which caused a minor torrent of water down both sides of the road, along the B1456 past Blacksmith's Cottage and its wishing well.
