More than 200 people turned out as a Shotley peninsula character known for her sense of humour, adventure and smile, was laid to rest at Seven Hills Crematorium this afternoon.

Karen Higgs was described as a 'Lovely Little Lady, 'best sister ever' and 'blessing from God', during an emotional service in front of family and friends for the 51-year-old who passed away after a short illness in hospital.

After arriving in a pink, glitter encrusted coffin bedecked with flowers and accompanied by a floral handbag, Karen's service was conducted by Andrew Coulson featured heartfelt and moving tributes from her mum and dad Lyn and Bob, sister Catherine and close friend Brenda, with many in the congregation moved to tears.

Poems, prayers, 'All Things Bright and Beautiful', a rendition of Dancing Queen and a photographic display played to McFly's 'It's All About You' were all part of the service.

Mr Coulson recounted fond memories of his encounters with Karen, including being inspired by her playing carpet bowls, while a large number of people attending knew Karen from her acting on various big stages, and being a star in the Shotley Drama Group show and pantos, and 25 years 'running' Hadleigh Road's Sainsbury's.

A collection was held in memory of Karen for Macmillan Cancer Care and East Anglian Air Ambulance, which had flown to her aid as local responders also helped.

Many people attended Shotley Village Hall to share memories and support each other, with food and drinks provided by the Shotley Rose.
