Holbrook's Eric Deacon was overjoyed when celebrating his 100th birthday as he received an incredible 150 cards from well-wishers.

To help him mark the momentous milestone, Eric also received the traditional telegram from the King.

A resident at Anchor's St Marys care home on Woodlands Road, Eric was absolutely blown away by everyone's generosity and has said thank you for the outpouring of kind words he received on his special day on Monday, August 14.

Leading up to his 100th birthday, the care team St Marys asked the public to send Eric birthday cards to wish him a happy birthday.

Along with the cards, Eric also enjoyed some special birthday treats including a trifle as part of his birthday party. Eric's celebrations were attended by his loved ones and residents and colleagues at the care home.

Eric was born in Wellingborough and moved to Holbrook in Ipswich, Suffolk, in October 2021 - just after his 98th birthday. Before he retired, Eric worked as an accounting clerk, although he has always said that he regarded his allotments as his real job and used the Monday to Friday paid job as time to recover.

When asked his secret to a long and happy life, Eric said: "It's just crept up on me. Being outside on my allotment and enjoying life is my secret."

Anna Dabrowska, manager of St Marys care home, said: "Eric is a lovely person and always brings a smile to everyone's faces here. We're delighted we could celebrate Eric's 100th birthday with him and thank you so much to everyone who sent in cards and helped make it so special."
