The Shotley Post Office will be closing at 1pm Monday to Saturdays until further notice, to ensure a continued service.
Owner Manish Patel shares the duties with Vicky Sadler and the dynamic duo have decided to never be in the same room together so at least open can always be able to open the counter service for customers.
Mr Patel said: "We are doing our best to keep the community supplied and my staff have been brilliant.
"However, we have taken the decision to cut the post office opening hours so one of us can always be there.
"If either Vicky or I became ill it would make it very difficult so it makes sense for just one of being there.
I'm sure the community will understand and continue to support us as they have." The post office is within Premier Stores in Kingsland, Shotley, which will stay open until 7pm, and like all shops on the peninsula is operating a strict social distancing policy. Only two people are allowed in the shop at any one time, although there are chairs outside for customers' comfort, and they are requested to keep a two-metre distance from any fellow shopper. It is requested customers use contactless payment whenever possible and only buy one loaf of bread at a time. The shop staff have offered to do deliveries in their own time for those elderly or vulnerable self-isolaters. Premier Stores number 01473 787281. The Shotley and Erwarton Good Neighbours scheme is also on hand to help with shopping, collecting prescriptions or any other errands that need running. Contact 07799873881.
