A renowned peninsula pub has revealed its plans to reopen next week, as the government looks set to relax lockdown rules on bars and restaurants earlier than expected.

The Butt & Oyster at Pin Mill will be opening for a takeaway service next Wednesday, June, offering a light breakfast menu and then a main menu 12pm-8pm five days a week. See menu here...

Dale Russell, Butt & Oyster general manager, revealed the pub had everything in pace ready for reopening, which could be less than a month away.

"We are raring to go, we have menus ready and staff waiting for the go ahead from the government," said Dale.

"I imagine they will open us for outside only dining first, which as you can imagine for The Butt & Oyster is no problem at all, we will most likely operate a waiter/waitress table service outside, like you'd normally find in the main dining room, this will ensure no one has to order from the bar, therefore reducing the social contact.

"I can foresee people being very excited to return to pubs and restaurants, and I know me and my staff are very much looking forward to coming back to some form of normality."

The Bull at Brantham has also established a routine to provide a takeaway service, and will be open as from tomorrow (Thursday) Friday and Saturday between 4.30pm - 8pm. Check here for details.

Owners Paul and Gemma Chenery are also waiting on the government go-ahead so they can open their large garden area for customers, and that could come within weeks.

Many feared pubs, restaurants and club would not be able to open until September at the realiser, with some concerns it could be as late as Christmas.

However, various reports now point to the hospitality industry getting an amber light for those establishments with gardens, patios and large outside spaces, to be allowed to open by the end of this month, ahead of the July 4 target.

A second phase would then follow with all pubs being allowed to open indoors but with strict controls in place, covering social distancing, ventilation, screens when paying, ordering and collecting (but not between tables).

One idea is for an app which would allow drinkers to order via their phone, then collect from the bar without the need to come into contact with staff or other customers.

It is based on an app already in use by pub chain Wetherspoons, that allows anyone with a smart phone to order food and drink to their table.

Tables will also be placed two metres apart, or one metre if the Government's social distancing rules change in line with the World Health Organisation guidelines.

Virtually all the pubs on the peninsula, from the Shipwreck, Bristol Arms and Rose in Shotley, Butt & Oyster and Red Lion in Chelmondiston, Boot at Freston, Harkstead's Bakers Arms, Kings Head and Gardeners Arms in Stutton, the Wheatsheaf and White Horse in Tattingstone, Bull at Brantham and Compasses in Holbrook, could be allowed to open before July 4, although there remains a question mark regarding the future of the Swan at Holbrook.
