Alert diners and drinkers at the Bristol Arms helped the RNLI and Coastguard to rescue a boat which had broken down yards from the shore off Shotley.

Following their part in helping the Allen Gardiner during the night, the Holbrook Coastguard were in action again this afternoon to help rescue a motor boat which had lost power in the River Stour.

Concerned customers reported the problem to landlord and chef Shane Rolin, whois member in Holbrook Coastguard, who quickly contacted his colleagues and the inshore lifeboat (ILB) from RNLI Harwich Lifeboat Station.

Holbrook Coastguard chief Ben Ambrose said: "As we awaited their arrival, we hailed a passing motor vessel to standby in case the occupants of the boat needed immediate rescue from the water. Luckily they were able to keep baling until the ILB arrived shortly after and were quickly towed back alongside Shotley Sailing-Club.

"The team then helped them recover the boat on to their trailer where it was discovered the source of the water was a missing bung in the stern. Luckily the group had buoyancy aids."

"Thanks to Shane from the Bristol Arms (who happens to be one of the team) for cooling soft drinks afterwards."

The peninsula based crew members also helped out the East Anglian Ambulance service last night after a person at Harkstead had lost consciousness and needed emergency treatment.

In the event of an emergency along our coastline or estuaries or in mud call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
