A former World War One telegraphy station that was turned into a family home has been sold for more than £400,000.
Shotley Cottage, which is on the main road backing on to the former HMS Ganges site in Shotley Gate, was on the market for between £425k and £450k and has found a new owner, subject to contract.
The large, three bedroom, family home with a well maintained garden and fish pond was owned by June Stroud, who, along with her late husband Frank used to own and run Chaters Motoring Booksellers, which was established some 50 years ago band remains one of the world's best known and respected sellers of automotive books, classic car books and motorsport bestsellers online.
The couple bought the house after falling in love with the cottage while sailing in the nearby rivers and morning at Shotley Marina but now Mrs Stroud is looking to downsize.
The pink cottage had been converted from a radio telegraphy station, which was used extensively in the first world war. The skills and equipment were moved within HMS Ganges where future signalmen were trained, as the building was turned into a cottage, and later extended.
The estate agents described the property as perfect for anyone looking to upsize and to make their own.
Internally the property comprises an entrance porch, sitting room, separate dining room, generous kitchen/breakfast room, additional rear lobby/porch, inner hallway/study, utility room/wet room, cloakroom and a good size lounge.
To the first floor there are three good size bedrooms, en suite to master and a family bathroom.
Externally to the front there is a driveway providing off road parking for several cars, and also benefiting from two garages and a carport that provides additional off road parking.
To the rear there is a generous size rear garden that is mainly laid to lawn that would be perfect for entertaining.
The peninsula is proving a popular place to come and live, especially as home working has become more prevalent due to the pandemic, with good home office space, wi-fi, local walks and amenities proving quite an attraction for those looking to move away from London living and working, while still able to commute when necessary.
