A peninsula family has paid tribute to a former publican by setting up a fund, which has already reached nearly £900, to thank the hospice which looked after him during his dying days.

Anthony Stroud, known as Tony, passed away aged 71, after battling Oesophageal Cancer. He spent his final days under the care of St Elizabeth Hospice, and staff have been praised for their outstanding care.

London-born Tony was a popular regular at the Shotley Rose ever since moving to the area with wife Rita to be closer to their daughter Tracy and her family.

As a West Ham fan, Tony enjoyed banter with Ipswich Town fans, especially those behind the bar over the years, was well known for his generous nature who enjoyed the quiz nights.

He went out his way to help neighbours and family as he settled down after working many years contracting as a Computer Analyst Programmer, which had him working in many different locations around the world.

He had very fond memories of his time living in Abu Dhabi with his family. He mainly played football and cricket in his younger years, but continued to watch most sport throughout his life.

Tracy said: "My dad was a kind, generous family man who was much loved and will always be remembered."

Tony spent many being looked after by St Elizabeth Hospice staff and continued to receive end of life care in his home setting until he passed away.

Tracy added: "The care and support Tony us as the family received from everyone at the hospice was nothing short of amazing. For this reason we set up this tribute page in memory of Tony and would appreciate any donations for this wonderful Hospice."

A funeral service will be held at Seven Hills Crematorium on Friday 29th May 2020 16:30 but only Immediate family can attend due to restrictions.

A thanksgiving service celebrating his life will follow when the virus restrictions are eased and a gathering is allowed.

Donations can be made to St Elizabeth Hospice here.
