A fly tipper who has dumped cardboard boxes and wood in a lay-by near the Strand has been labelled 'disgusting' and a 'disgrace'.

Two piles of rubbish were left in the lay-by at the bottom of Freston Hill close to the beauty spot overlooked by the Orwell Bridge, at the gateway to the Shotley peninsula.

One pile consisted of a number of cardboard boxes which had held a 150cm wooden bench, and included a label, which investigators may be able to use to identify the culprit.

A second pile a few feet away was broken up bits of wood.

A passer by who saw the dumped debris has called on the person who had work done to fit anew bench to call the authorities and name the person who had been tasked with removing the rubbish.

Ron Cook from Chelmondiston, said: "This is utterly disgusting and a despicable act by someone who clearly has no decency or pride in his (or her_ work.

"Someone somewhere, probably not that far away, will know who this was, even if they did not dump this themeless. They should report them before they are found and, hopefully prosecuted."

Babergh council has been informed of the fly-tipping and usually tries to clear it away within two working days.

Clues as the the identity of its origin will be investigated on site.

A Babergh spokesperson said: "Fly-tipping is a criminal offence that we take extremely seriously, and wherever possible, we will seek to prosecute anyone caught illegally dumping waste.

"As well as being unsightly and costly to clear up, it is damaging to the environment and can lead to serious pollution of land and waterways. It is also a threat to local wildlife."

Babergh's battle against fly-tipping continues and following a spike in 2020/21, the number of incidents in the district are now back in line with pre-pandemic figures, but the spokesperson added: "Even one incident of fly-tipping in our district is one too many."

There is a range of advice on the Babergh website for residents, and businesses, including checking waste carrier licence details of anyone you employ to dispose of waste on your behalf.

There is also advice on what to do if you discover fly-tipped waste and how to report it.
