A popular wild camping site has been forced to issue a temporary ban on making fires to cook due to tinder dry conditions.

The Netherhall site in Harkstead, which specialises in wild camping and shepherd hut accommodation, came under threat when a nearby grass crop caught fire during cutting on Tuesday afternoon.

Holbrook's retained fire crew and an engine from Ipswich East were out quickly to deal with the field fire before it spread to a nearby wheat field, and were stood down a half hour later.

The Harkstead incident was the third in an afternoon, Suffolk Fire Service dealt with yesterday

Farmer, and campsite co-owner Sam Wrinch, explained that following fire service advice, and due to the tinder dry conditions and high temperatures, they were taking special precautions.

Sam said: "We have advised that we put a temporary fire ban in place for the campsite taking effect immediately.

"This means the log burners and fire pits can not be used.

"We can allow the careful use of gas stoves and of course you can enjoy a disposable BBQ down on the beach whilst you watch the sunset.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience but we hope you understand this is for guest safety and for the safety of our crops."

The site remains open, with bookings available for the Shepherds Huts too.
