A fire which devastated a house in Shotley is believed to have been accidentally started by a puppy.

Fire investigators have concluded the young black lurcher jumped up and inadvertently turned on a hob in the kitchen of the house in Great Harlings, Shotley Gate, on Monday.

Home owner Andy Miley said: "The fire officer told me the fire had started on the cooker. There was some food in spot ready to be cooked and it looks like the pup has jumped up and nudged a dial."

The blaze completely gutted the kitchen and other parts of the house and Mr Miley feared he would have to temporarily rehome the dogs, Bruno and Molly, and find emergency accommodation for himself.

Babergh responded quickly to offer former soldier Mr Miley support and outlined his options, including temporary accommodation or emergency power supply.

However, friends and neighbours rallied round and CJ Electrical were able to restore power safely and Mr Miley decided to return to the house.

"I can't thank people enough for their kindness and support," said Mr Miley. I stayed on the floor at my sister's house that night, and the council said they would find me something as an emergency.

"But once we got the power back on I have decided to stay at the house and get things sorted."

Mr Miley, who is separated from his wife and two of his children, has discovered the house insurance is no longer valid and he is not covered for the damage and loss.

He said: "It is gutting because this was my family home and there are a lot of memories in the house.

"I have lost a lot of possessions and it is going to cost thousand to put right. I have only just finished redecorating the house, so it will be a case on starting all over again, but I just have to get on with it."

Three crews from Holbrook and Ipswich went to the blaze which started at around 10.30am on Monday. Police closed a section of the road due to the smoke and to allow the fire crews to work safely.
