Forget the cliffhanger between England and the West Indies, grassroots cricket is back and this is what it is all about.

Shotley Peninsula Cricket Club saw off Tendring Park CC, despite being bowled out for 121 with spinner Cal Woolston causing havoc at Green Lane, Tattingstone on Sunday.

Ru Dearing led the peninsula team (nicknamed the Squirrels) in their fightback with some outstanding fielding, including a couple of smart catches, supported by a good graphics from Lee Mandley.

Daniel Blonfield led the bowling unit, taking three for just 12 runs, while young teenager Tommy Smith weighed in with three for 21. Stephen Flannery took the final wickets with Tendring needing just 12 runs from four remaining overs.

"A great game and fun had by all," said Honorary President and bowler Lee Mandley. "It was great to have cricket back and good luck to a very good Tendring side for the rest of their summer fixtures."

The Squirrels enjoyed success last week as a Greg Symes XI beat a Windsor XI by 14 runs in the SPCC Captains cup and Peter Cricket Shield 2020,with John Evison clinching the Peter 'Hammy' Mandley MVP award with his 41 runs. They also eased to a comfortable win over the Holbrook Swan last Friday.

Covid-19 guidelines remain in place for players and officials of both team, and supporters are encouraged to socially distance. The squad will be boosted this week as their traditional post match water hole, the Tattingstone Wheatsheaf, opens in earnest from Thursday.
