Covid-19: Police increase patrols on peninsula to tackle Covidiots

Suffolk police will today step up patrols on the Shotley peninsula to tackle people making non-essential journeys.

Despite explicit instructions by the government telling people to stay at home, scores of motorists drove onto the peninsula simply to enjoy the view or go for a walk, which is forbidden.

People are only supposed to walk where they live, not drive anywhere to take their dog for a walk, exercise, or take a stroll.

The police received numerous calls from angry Shotley residents reporting motorists parked on the waterfront, and others taking picnic yesterday, and it is feared with the weather getting even warmer more people, labelled Covidiots, will ignore the orders to stay at home.

One resident said: "These people are Covidiots, no doubt about it. They are ignorant and somehow think the rules don't apply to them.

"They simply don't understand they should not be driving here from wherever. They are putting people's lives at risk, adding to the immense strain the NHS workers and are frankly being selfish and irresponsible."

It was a similar story on the Strand, Pin Mill, Alton reservoir and Holbrook Creek.

Nub News has been told police will be visiting the peninsula today to take action against people making non-essential journeys.

Officers can hand out £60 fines to those who break the rules – although they are reduced to £30 if paid within 30 days.

A police spokeswoman confirmed: "If we have to enforce the fines then we will, but we are trying to educate people of the importance of the rules in the first instance."

If you see a non-local parked up, take photo of the car reg and send too: [email protected] so the police can gather intelligence and take the necessary action. You can also report offenders on the Suffolk police website or call 101. If it is a large group committing the offence call 999.
