An image on a 10foot high totem pole in Brantham, which offended some Brantham villagers has been painted white to appease complainants.

Nub News reported last Tuesday how police and been informed about the alleged racist overtones of a particular section of the pole and after a visit by police the homeowner agreed to make the change.

Brian Connery, of Bergholt Road, has now painted over the carved wooden figure of a grinning black man with bright white teeth, wearing a blue suit, to make the face white to avoid causing any further offence.

Suffolk police said that they did not believe Mr Connery had committed a hate crime after visiting him and examining the totem pole but reached a way forward.

A number of national news outlets followed up our two stories about the offence caused by the totem pole, which could be easily seen from the main road between Brantham and East Bergholt.
