Brantham's Purple Wombles clean up with litter picking Initiative
Purple Wombles in Brantham have completed another successful litter pick along the village paths.
Given the nickname due to the purple coloured bags they use to collect rubbish, the litter pickers took their tally to 40 bags filled since they started on Earth Day in April.
Organisers Lynn Laws and Sam Garnham brought their community together with an initiative to clean-up their local area and last weekend it culminating in a village litter pick sponsored by Brantham parish council and UW Foundation, that supplied the purple packs.
With Autumn now here, Lynn and Sam who are Utility Warehouse Partners, galvanised young and old in going out for a collective clean up.
"Our local community is so important to us," said Lynn. "It's where many of our customers and friends live and in a normal year we would have been at summer events and fetes supporting charities and our community that way.
"But as you know, it hasn't been a normal year, so doing a litter pick is another way to get involved with the community, have some fun and do something good.
"Having so many children take part was fantastic and their enthusiasm and work ethic were awesome and lets face it, they are the future of the village.
"Thank you to everyone that came and joined in, we couldn't have done it without you."
Brantham parish council chairman Alastair McCraw added: 'It's just fantastic to see so many of our younger villagers turning out with such enthusiasm.
"This is, after all, going to be their planet in the future. They might well become better custodians of it.''
Utility Warehouse CEO Andrew Lindsay who is a GB rowing gold medal Olympian, believes communities everywhere take pride in their village and is delighted his company can support them.
"This is exactly what the spirit of UW is about," said Mr Lindsay. "We truly believe in the power of people and there are partners up and down the UK doing brilliant things in their local communities and this is just another example of how selfless they are.
"This was a completely partner led idea and we have just helped them with some purple refuse sacks and bee-friendly seeds.
"We are so proud of everyone who is out there picking up litter and showing pride in their local communities."
