Body cam warning for Peninsula's Co-op staff
By Derek Davis 21st Sep 2020
Co-op staff in Holbrook and Brantham could be issued body cams if a two-month trial in other parts of the country is successful.
Central England Co-op is trialling the use of colleague body cameras as part of its ongoing effort to keep staff safe and help drive down crime in stores, which has also been an issue on the Shotley peninsula.
One former staff member who lives locally told Nub News: "The large majority of our customers are really nice but some just don't like being told what to do, or abide by the rules.
"I have been shouted and sworn at and other colleagues have been threatened. We should not have to put up with that.
"Like I say, it is nowhere near everyone but even once or twice a week is too many." If successful, the cameras could be rolled out across other stores in the business in an effort to deter threats and acts of violence towards colleagues and security guards. This comes as part of an ongoing high-profile Co-op campaign for more to be done to protect shopworkers who find themselves a victim of crime, a campaign which recently was backed by over 200 MPs from across the political divide. Nicola Walton, Loss Prevention Advisor, said: "We are aware that any kind of crime can be frightening for store colleagues.
