Plumes of black smoke wafting down the river Stour spotted by people along the Shotley peninsula were caused by a tyre fire.

Two fire crews from Dovercourt were called to the fire just after 2pm, involving a large number of tyres that had been left in an area of waste land on Una Road in Parkeston.

The fire took behind the Prospector 5 oil rig which has been the cause of numerous spice complaints over the past few months.

Firefighters at the scene report that the row of tyres measure approximately 150m were alight and causing the black toxic smoke and fumes.

Crews made good progress but it still took nearly 90 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Despite the smoke and distraction, nothing could stop two couples from Shotley enjoying their fishing trip from there boat anchored on the Stour.
