Babergh is writing to the Government restating their objections to plans for more pylons in the Suffolk countryside.

National Grid is conducting a non-statutory consultation on its Norwich to Tilbury overhead line proposals.

This is in addition to the planned Bramford to Twinstead power supply.

The plans would see an additional line of pylons and cables installed across Babergh, and neighbouring Mid Suffolk council – impacting on the environment, local communities and businesses.

While the councils recognise the national importance of strategic energy infrastructure for the transition to net zero, they are calling for a co-ordinated offshore solution.

At full council meetings this week, both authorities unanimously agreed the council chairs, Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi (Babergh) and Cllr Rowland Warboys (Mid Suffolk), would write to the Government outlining their objections.

Cllr John Ward, deputy leader of Babergh District Council, said: "This proposal is a critical moment which needs to trigger a wider conversation about how we ensure we have the right energy infrastructure without the industrialisation of the countryside.

"We want to see a coordinated, offshore approach to deliver the transmission network reinforcement objectives of the various projects in the region and elsewhere in the UK.

"This will minimise onshore infrastructure and the associated impacts of that."

The councils will also be making a formal response to the current non-statutory consultation on the Norwich to Tilbury project in due course.

In the meantime, the councils are urging residents, businesses, councillors, parish councils and campaign groups to make their concerns about the project known to National Grid.
