Planned charge increases for garden waste collections in Babergh, including the Shotley peninsula, would see residents paying almost £70 to start and £60 to renew the service.

Babergh cabinet agreed to include new fees and charges in its draft budgets today; the decision to approve these budgets will be taken by full council.

In addition to waste services increases, Babergh cabinet also agreed the highest statutory charge increases would be for four-year zoo licences, with Jimmy's Farm an example, which will see a rise of £395 to £930.

Peninsula pubs, cafes and restaurants would also see food hygiene rating rescore visits increase from £72 to £180.

A new subscription for garden waste collection would increase by £7 in Babergh – resulting in a cost of £69 for the district.

The cost of renewing a subscription would increase to £59 – an uplift of £2 for Babergh customers.

Replacing missing bins and new sets of bins would increase to £69 respectively.

Although the vote in favour was unanimous, councillors questioned the cost of collection for bulky items. This would increase by £4.50 across Baberg under the plans, causing residents to pay £49.50.

Independent Conservative Cllr Jan Osborne said: "I have been advocating for some time now that the charges for bulky items is too much.

"We are all aware of the huge problems we have in Babergh with domestic fly tipping. It has an impact on people's quality of life and a cost to the council."

Babergh Cllr Alistair McCraw responded by explaining the £49.50 charge can cover five items, and pointing out the costs involved with having workers collect large pieces.

The fees and charges are expected to bring in under £4.1 million next financial year in Babergh – £35,000 less than by the end of this financial year.

Cllr David Busby, Babergh cabinet member for finance, assets and investments, said: "Although it looks like some of the fees and charges are going up significantly, in fact we are going to bring in less money from them next year than we are with the current scheme."

The above increases are those decided on at council level. Statutory charge changes were also included in the cabinet reports; these have no input by councils and are decided by the government.
