A group of men brandishing exes and swords fought a pitch battle in Shotley on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Fear not though, it was all part of normal Viking life reliving life on the Shotley peninsula going back some 2,000 years.

Hosted by the Rose pub, warriors, witches and weavers from the Wuffa Group pitched up in their own tents to demonstrate their ancient crafts and lifestyle.

Children were entertained and told stories of yore, and how the god Odin and pals created earth by using the body parts of a giant.

Although the the whole re-enactment was not as large scale as originally planned due to unforeseen circumstances, it still proved to be a superb afternoon's entertainment with a good number of today's villagers enjoying the history and, of course, the big fight display.
