Warning to motorists as Orwell Bridge six week lane closures revealed

The Orwell Bridge will be partially closed to change the current weather system and for routine maintenance as from Saturday.

Work on the main arterial route serving the Shotley peninsula to Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Ipswich is expected to take six weeks to be completed.

Highways England will also be installing new park and ride signs during the planned works between February 5 to Friday, March 25.

The Agency has confirmed it will require some full eastbound closures and lane closures, which are detailed below.

A14 junction 55 to 58 eastbound will have overnight closures between 8pm and 6am:

Saturday 5 February and Sunday 6 February

Saturday 12 February and Sunday 13 February

Saturday 19 February and Sunday 20 February

Saturday 5 March and Sunday 6 March

Traffic will be diverted off the A14 at junction 55 onto the A1214 (Colchester Road), A12 to re-join the A14 at junction 58.

A14 junction 55 to 58 eastbound lane 1 will have closure overnight between 8pm and 6am:

Monday 8 February to Friday 11 February

Monday 14 February to Friday 18 February

Monday 21 February to Friday 25 February

Monday 28 February to Friday 4 March

Monday 7 March to Friday 11 March

Monday 14 March to Friday 18 March

Monday 21 March to Friday 25 March
  • Completed in 1982, work on the bridge started in 1979 after pilings were driven 40metres into the Orwell's river bed.
The main span is 190 metres, which, at the time of its construction, was the longest pre-stressed concrete span in use. The total length is 1,287m from Wherstead to the site of the former Ipswich Airport. The width is 24 metres with an air draft of 43 metres.
