Did you know?
On this night in 1987, scores of trees were blown over, boats were tossed onto shorelines and people's homes were damaged on the Shotley peninsula as the great storm struck, railway and bus services were cancelled and all state schools in the county were closed. Only choristers stayed on at RHS, with everyone else sent home for half-term a few days early.

“Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she'd heard there was a hurricane on the way. Well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn’t."

Joke of the day:
A man who lived by the sea grew a cucumber so large he was able to turn it into his house. One day a bad storm flooded the area with seawater and damaged his home.
