Takeaway Review: Shipwreck Bar and Restaurant

With many pubs and takeaways fighting a bitter battle just to survive, the Hungry Hack has decided to try out each one of the menus we get to know about during these interesting and challenging times.

Today we focus on one of the most picturesque and interesting places on the Shotley peninsula, where your food and drink comes with an ever changing view.

The Shipwreck Bar and Restaurant reopened for takeaway only this week and is already drawing in regulars and visitors, between 11am to 5pm (food finishes at 4pm).

For me it was a toss up between the scampi or beer battered cod with chips and I went for scampi, simply because I have not had it for a while.

Great choice - succulent pieces of scampi enclosed in a lightly coated breaded covering. The tartar sauce came in a separate tub, and was the perfect accompaniment, along with fresh salad garnish and chunky chips.

The wooden knife and fork was a good touch, safe, easy to use and disposable in a good way.

All enjoyed while looking out over the estuary towards Felixstowe on the left of me, Harwich to the right and me stuck in the middle with food. washing it down with Suffolk's legendary Aspall's cider.

The menu is surprisingly comprehensive and more than does the job with stroganoff, vegetarian curry, and warm chicken salad, among the mains, a range of sandwiches and lighter bites and sides. (Swipe top picture right to scroll through pics for menu)

Alex and Janey have put in a simple to follow, effective social distancing routine, where you can order at the bar or phone ahead (788865), wait outside where you can enjoy a drink in a plastic takeaway container, with plenty of space between benches.

Treat your dad this Father's Day to a meal with a beer and view. Go to The Shipwreck on our directory for more details.

An added bonus is the harbour's foot and cycle ferry from Harwich and Felixstowe is operating if people over there fancy a jaunt to the peninsula.
