Although children have not been able to visit Santa in his grotto this year, they were treated to an early visit as the annual

Brantham Santa Float went to the streets to thrill hundreds of excited youngsters.

"This year has been a difficult one for many, so we really wanted the float to go ahead," said spokesperson Cheryl Spooner,

"There are a lot of families throughout Brantham that look forward to seeing Santa and all his helpers. So it had to go ahead.

"We had to make changes from previous years, so no knocking at doors, no handing out sweets. So to make it a little more special, all Santa's helpers dressed up in fancy dress.

"So not only seeing the float but about 20 volunteers dressed as elves, snowmen and other festive characters. It was a fantastic atmosphere and made for lots of magical family moments."

The Brantham Santa Float dates back some years when Santa actually walked the streets of Brantham ringing a bell.

Alastair McCraw, Babergh district councillor for Brantham ward said: "We've not been able to do so much in the village this year. The annual Brantham Fireworks weren't going to be safe with Covid for example.

"So it's a sheer joy to see this amazing tradition go on, with all the precautions in place. A 'peace' of Christmas cheer for everybody. God bless them, every one."

Organisers this year are hoping to at least match last year's total of £3,500 shared between East Anglia Children's Hospice and Essex Air Ambulance.

But by not knocking at doors they have had to move to online fundraising via Just Giving, so funds are still coming in. They also had collection buckets on the day, but that money has been put to one side for 72 hours to make sure it is covid safe, while local businesses have lent their support.

Cheryl added added: "We would like to thank The Cattawade Crown public house for hosting us every year. Also The Brantham Bull for putting on refreshments for us all.

"Without Trot Ward, Phil Wainwright, Amanda Wainwright and about 20 volunteers this would not be possible... So well done to everyone involved."

  • Santa will be doing the rounds in Shotley on Christmas Day morning, leaving from the Shotley Rose.
