Eggheads anniversary: The day Shotley eggbeaters created quiz history
Back in the day when all the talk was of Brexit, Corona virus was an allergic reaction to a brand of fizzy pop and Ipswich were a Championship team, a team of six quizzers caught the train to Glasgow to take on the mighty Eggheads.
Little did they, as they downed beers, and in Marian's case something a bit more sophisticated, tested themselves with questions from an Egghead's book courtesy of quizmaster extraordinaire Shane on the journey, that they would create brainteasing history.
Secretly the hope was not to mess up, don't be the one to get a relatively easy question wrong on one of BBC2's most popular programmes.
Each dared to hope they might beat their own Egghead opponent and get to the final round. We even dared to hope we could sneak a win, and bring relative glory to the Shotley peninsula, while spreading the word about the beautiful place we live.
Shotley Open Spacers, named after the voluntary group that does so much in the village to keep public paths clear, lead health walks and generally promote the area to help the local economy by attracting walkers and other visitors, consisted of captain Derek Davis, SOS chairman Gary Richens, honourable secretary Geraint Pugh, volunteers Marian Pugh and Ian Peters, with supporter and Bristol Arms landlord Shane Rolin.
The whole trip and experience was very well organised by 12-Yard productions and even the late night and early morning did not faze the Shotley Open Spacers.
Make up done, we were into the studio going through the pre-amble and final touch ups. Jeremy Vine swanned in, oozing professionalism, enthusiasm and warmth to us country bumpkins.
SOS were up against Chris Hughes, a Mastermind and International Mastermind champion and former Brain of Britain winner, Pat Gibson, who is a four-time world quiz champion and won £1million on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Lisa Thiel, who got to the final of the Weakest Link and The Chase, Barry Simmons, another Brain of Britain winner who won £64,000 on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, and Beth Webster, who holds the record for most appearances by a woman on Mastermind and competes in the UK Quizzing Grand Prix circuit.
And so down to business; sport came up first and the pressure was on for the skipper Derek, a sports journalist by trade. He took on Chris, a railway enthusiast who chatted about Harwich pier, HMS Ganges and Suffolk beer at the Bristol on the way to a separate room used to be quizzed by Jeremy.
Even with a choice of three answers, Chris stumbled twice, Derek answered his with ease. Shane, Ian and Gary had it much tougher but showed an incredible breadth of knowledge, even triumphing in the tie-break when there is no choice of three answers. There was a touch and go moment in the last challenger round when former Brain of Britain winner Barry faltered on a Greek island question, with Shane waiting to pounce and amazingly we were ALL in the final, with Marian leading us against the wonderful Lisa.
Three nerve-wracking questions later and that was it – we had won, but the £11,000 prize money, shared among all six of us, was almost irrelevant.
We had not only won but we had answered every single one of our questions correctly. The first, and so far, only team ever to achieve that feat in 2,000 episodes.
Then came the wait, 14 months after recording the show, our epic episode was broadcast, we had kept the secret, and there was genuine amazement among viewers when it was aired and everyone witnessed what we had done and the goodwill messages poured in.
All the Eggheads were magnanimous in defeat, Jeremy was almost gushing and made it a big thing of it on his Chanel Five, and Radio Two shows when it all came out.
Being a typically humble, modest lot, life goes on for the Shotley Open Spacers. The group continues to support Walkers Are Welcome, they were the first group in Suffolk to gain the accreditation, a tribute to them and the amazing walks, walker and dog friendly pubs and accommodation establishments, we have on the peninsula.
Eggheads returns to our screens next month, we wait with bated breath to see if any team can match SOS's historic achievement, and see if our Series 20, Episode 81, is repeated on BBC 2 at some point this spring/summer.
