The final destinations for Suffolk's recycling waste have been revealed – with global spots like India and Vietnam among those to take thousands of tonnes of card and paper waste, including some from the Chelmondiston tip on the Shotley peninsula.

Data published on the Suffolk Recycling website provides a breakdown of the top nations to take in Suffolk's recycling waste for 2019/20, the most recent year available.

Monday's Motivation

The first Victoria Cross, Britain's highest medal for bravery, was awarded to Charles Lucas, in 1854 who was awarded it during the Crimean War for conspicuous bravery. The medal was made from metal from a cannon captured at Sebastopol. The Victoria Cross was extended to colonial troops in 1867 and to date a total of 1,358 Victoria Crosses have been awarded. Paratrooper Lance corporal Joshua Leakey was the most recent recipient in 2015 for bravery in Afghanistan.

First some good news. The Babergh Locality Award scheme which I implemented last year, has reopened for the 2021/2022 tranche and I would encourage community groups in Shotley and Erwarton looking for small amounts (from £250) to get in touch with me to discuss what they need and how to apply.

Among the awards I gave last year was £365 towards the Shotley Open Spaces' mobile defib, situated on the Bristol Arms wall which can mean the difference between life and death, as we witnessed from the shocking collapse of Christian Eriksen during a recent Euro 2020 match.

The Summer Solstice is on its way, taking place on what we call the longest day of the year, and we on the Shotley peninsula will be among the first in the UK to see it occur.

The Summer Solstice occurs when one of the earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the sun, so therefore it reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight.

Weight loss celebration in group

A weight has been lifted across the Peninsula and surrounding areas following the recent return to Slimming World groups with the easing of covid restrictions.

Members can now book to attend Brantham Leisure Centre for a morning session and Freston Village Hall for an evening. Safety measures are in place, such as social distancing, face masks and hand sanitizers to keep everyone safe.
