An important and popular fund-raising auction will go ahead, despite concerns countrywide of people gathering at public events, due to Coronavirus.

Shotley Village Hall Management Committee decided to continue as usual, with lots accepted tomorrow (Thursday) public viewing on Friday and the actual auction Saturday morning, which attracts between 75 -100 people, after considering all factors and advice about dealing with Covid-19.

Norman Bugg, committee member and trustee, said: "The committee has decided to go ahead with the auction. We would be damned if we didn't and probably damned if we do.

"It is so difficult to know what to do for the best but we have taken all the advice into consideration.

"It appears Suffolk has escaped relatively lightly but if the situation worsens then we would have to reconsider it.

"It could be that less people turn up, or less lots are entered but we hope not. Last year the amount raised was some 10% of our total income, so you can see how important it is.

"That said we would also put public safety first."

Some smaller community events throughout Suffolk have been cancelled by local organisers due to concerns of Coronavirus and the effect it could have on attendances. However, the Women's Cycle Tour and Suffolk Show are among those larger that have decided to continue for now.

The importance of the auction to the village hall funds was underlined in the annual accounts, which showed £1,197 was raised, of an annual income of £19,035. Bookings of £15,199 and donations and grants added another £1,853.

In his annual report chairman Ian Peters, said: "Our village hall goes from strength to strength and I'm indebted to all who make this venue the vibrant place it is for all those in our community.

"We now have added light and enhanced drainage in the car park, which makes it better welcome, especially in the winter months."

Shotley Village Hal was named as the county's Community Building of the Year, by Community Action Suffolk at an awards ceremony last September.

Mr Peters added: "(This is) a fitting tribute to all involved in the running of this important element of our village."
