A majestic 11-bed country estate has hit the market for the first time in 175 years - costing £2.5m.

The 'Woodlands' estate near Ipswich, Suffolk, has been in the hands of the same family since 1845.

Nestled in 46 acres of land near the village of Holbrook, the sale follows the death of Andrew Hunter-Rodwell in 2019, the fifth member of his family to own the estate.

The stately home boasts eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, along with a three-bed annexe flat, a pool, orangery and several additional farm buildings and outhouses.

Joint-agents Jackson-Stops and Knight-Frank have listed the estate in three lots, split between the house, lands and farm buildings, priced at £1.75m, £250,000 and £500,000 respectively.

The agents say that the house is ideal for buyers looking for a 'classic country home' with easy connections to London.

The home was first bought by Benjamin Bridges Hunter-Rodwell, MP for Cambridgeshire between 1874–1881 and son of the Mayor of Ipswich.

It stayed in the family after being inherited by Benjamin's son William, a first-class cricketer and soldier of the Suffolk Yeomanry.

William's son Sir Cecil Hunter-Rodwell meanwhile would serve as Governor of Fiji from 1918 to 1984, Governor of British Guiana from 1924 to 1928.

In his role as Governor of then South Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Sir Cecil even encountered a young Robert Mugabe - the future revolutionary who 'never forgave' Hunter-Rodwell for refusing to build a hospital.
